Precision Indenter

This odd looking test rig was designed to create rows of minute indentations in an aluminium substrate. Indentation pitch was 85 microns, or 300 dpi, controlled by a stepper motor driving a precision leadscrew and anti-backlash nut. Micrometer heads on the indentation table allowed fine adjustment of the substrate position. Indentation depth was set by the preloaded spring and adjustment knob shown at the top of the picture.

The indenting tool, similar in shape to that found in a Knoop hardness tester, was honed from tool steel and diamond lapped. The multiple facets can be seen in the photo. Blade2.JPG (2546 bytes)
